The Office of Washington Secretary of State, Sam Reed, announced that the 69-year-old has been diagnosed with kidney cancer and will undergo laparoscopic surgery next week at Virginia Mason Medical Center.
Reed's cancer was found after he complained of stomach pains and his doctors conducted tests. Though unrelated to his stomach pain, doctors found a tumor in his kidney.
