When celebrities are touched by cancer, either through their own diagnosis or the diagnosis of a loved one, many of them choose to use their platform to increase awareness and raise money to fight the disease. From breast cancer to prostate cancer, many celebrities are using their names to educate and inspire the public.

Dennis Hopper, best known for playing crazy roles in films such as Speed, died on Saturday from complications of his battle with prostate cancer. He died at his Venice, Calif., home surrounded by family and friends.
Hopper was diagnosed with prostate cancer last fall after reporting flu-like symptoms and underwent treatment. He spent most of 2010 in a heated divorce battle with his wife, Victoria.
He was 74.

A new book that combines the personal prostate cancer stories of celbrities and regular men called Prostate Cancer Survivors Speak Their Minds: Advice on Options, Treatments and Aftereffects by Arthur L. Burnett II, MD and Norman S. Morris (Wiley; April 1, 2010; $16.95 US/$19.95 CAN). The book notes that prostate cancer is the second leading cause of death for American men who are often searching for information on treatment options in the face of this life-threatening disease.

Jackson Rathbone, one of the stars of the blockbuster Twilight series, is raising adrenal cancer awareness in young Hollywood with his band, 100 Monkeys. The star lost his friend and fellow musician, Spencer Bell, to adrenal cancer in 2006. Bell was just 20-years-old when he died from the disease.
