New Study Shows Link Between Diabetes and Bladder Cancer

The American Cancer Society and the American Diabetes Association released research this week about the links between diabetes and cancer. Essentially, the report states that Type 2 diabetes may increase a person’s risk of getting cancer. One of the types of cancer listed is bladder cancer – which is one of the cancers that we focus on here on the Robotic-Prostatectomy blog.

The doctors involved with the study state that both diabetes and cancer are more common in those who are obese, physically inactive, and have poor diets.

Experts also point to biological links between diabetes and cancer including high insulin and glucose levels, and hormone-like substances from fat which are also thought to promote cancer.

There’s a mixed debate about how diabetes treatments effect cancer risk. Some experts point to metformin, a drug used to treat diabetes, lowering the risk of cancer. While other experts say that insulin treatments increase a person’s risk.

What does all of this mean for you? We’ve discussed the importance of healthy diet and exercise on the blog. Be sure to check out the following posts for more information about how you can take charge of your everyday health.

The experts in the study encourage patients to talk to their doctors about any treatments and risk factors they may have for diabetes and/or cancer.
